3rd PRINCIPLE:
GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY
& TRANSPARENCY
Government Accountability & Transparency
Government must be of the people, by the people, and for the people. We believe Government exists to serve the people. As such, Government has a fiduciary duty to act in the best interest of the people, to do all things with transparency, and to be accountable to the people for its acts and non-acts.
Transparency and accountability are fundamental components of a pono (good and just) democratic government. Governments exist to serve the people who live and work in the community. The people have a right to know how governments conduct public business and allocate taxpayers’ dollars. Governments have a duty to share this information with the people they serve, which is where accountability begins. A pono government, keeps the will and best interests of the people at the forefront of its efforts and is open and transparent in the process of serving them. Inadequate government transparency and oversight often leads to abuses of power and inadequate accountability.
